I have a '92 Ford Tempo 4yl 3-speed ATX I just bought two days ago second hand. I bought the full tune up minus brakes. I hand did everything, As I have so many times before. I replaced the valve cover gasket, distributor, rotor, plugs, wires, oil, and tranny fluid.
However, after having changed the tranny fluid (which was a bit old) I noticed it started rough shifting, and felt like a clutch was half engaged, my acceleration was horrible, i don't think it ever went into 3rd, and here today it's quit going into 2nd and the gears started ******* up all over. bad grinding when in park or neutral (like an amatuer grinding gears) and reverse is horrid. can't use the accelerator without jerking the engine out.
I know my mounts are bad, for the motor. I'm replacign those soon. I was told i just need a new trans. Should i just get a new one, if so is there any 4-speed atx conversions possible. If I can cheap fix it, please tell me? Maybe the trans fluid was wrong (cheap autozone brand dexron/mercon). Maybe a linkage gone? anything i could possibly fix myself.
ps I did forget to change the filter. |

There is no 4 speed automatic transaxle that will physically fit. The first thing would be to replace all three mounts. The mounts on T/Ts are known weak spots, especially the tranny mount. Since the ATX auto is completely mechanically controlled, another area to look at is the kickdown rod which has a bushing on the bottom that quite often wears out and falls out. There is also a spring in that mechanism that may get lost.
How many miles do you have? Normally, the 4 banger and the ATX are pretty much bullet proof, given reasonable maintenance, and not much bad treatment. Quiite often, just getting a "new" ATX transaxle from a junk yard cures all kinds of bad things, but start with the mounts and check out the kickdown rod.
Well, welcome to TTCCNA! You will find a lot of great info, at times "spirited" conversations, and helpful people who really care about these little machines. Please look at the Tech Center (left side of the page) and feel free to use the Search button on the TOP of the page. And by all means don't be shy about questions and contributions!! Enjoy your stay. |

| Yep, you may end up replacing the ATX, but you'll need to do the other stuff anyway. Too bad, that's really not too many miles. |

| is it possible that a pump went bad and it's not circualting? we just thought of that, because it is over filled, and only used about 7 quarts. it states it is an 8.3 quart tranny. |

You ARE checking fluid level with the engine warmed up, RUNNING and in park right?
Just dropping the pan will only drain maybe 2/3 of the fluid, the entire amount is with converter drained which is generally not possible nowadays.
You have the correct fluid. If pump not circulating the car simply will not move at all. Motor will rev up like in neutral with no noise.
I'd be thinking about why someone suddenly let go of a car in today's cash strapped economy. 14600 may actually be 114600. |

| oh sorry yeah forgot a digit. the car issue has been stressing me out, I just a few minutes ago finished the SECOND trans fluid change. this time i did change the filter, and it was full of shards. I'm majorly worried i've stripped a gear or something. it was alot of metal and shreds. it wasn't this much the first time, i'm not sure what it is i started it up for a little out here but with my nephew is asleep and it's still grinding. less loud though. so hopefully i'll start it and run it in the morning and it goes away. Hoping to death. |

| Be realistic with yourself, trans is probably dead. Normal trash in pan is only a small amount of dark clutch material and extremely small normal wear steel particles along with the normal superfine sludge that coats things. Anything more than that and it's gone bubba. No ATX on the planet can survive long with bigger metal shavings moving through it. |
