Clutch depresses and is pretty much stuck to the floor. You can only shift the car when it is turned off. Once you crank the ignition, the starter motor literally tries to move the car as the motor cranks. If you start the car in neutral, massive high pitched whirring / grinding noise.

Haven't had a chance to crawl under the car and check things out. Sounds to me like the pressure plate is shot and the throw-out bearing is grinding. Any other ideas? Sean

Sounds like you're on the right track, if it were a RWD vehicle, I'd say the slave cyl. was bad. My Isuzu Hombre did the same as you describe, except it would run normally if you started it in N. If you hit the starter while it was in gear, it'd try to move forward. If you cranked it in N, you couldn't get it in gear.

most likely culprit is the throwout bearing has worn though the fingers of the pressure plate. had that happen on my GLS and when it was in neutral it would make a grinding noise.

These are fully mechanical clutches John, no hydraulics on them at all. Sean

Had a similar issue on my SRT. Turns out the differential was actually slipping...
