So, my son and i were starting his "new" tempo. We replaced the plastic valve cover with an aluminum one and We finally got the bumper cover off to expose the rear fender / quarter panel. It's actually not as bad as I thought (hahahaha) - but still needs some major work!
I did notice that the rear floor is starting to look a little soft, but still has a while before there is any holes. I'm sure my son will only have the car for a year or two anyways (if that LOL)
Any suggestions on the easiest way to tackle the project since you can't just buy pre formed panels cheap? I've never done body work before, and my son just started auto body in tech school (10th grade) -
I'm sure I will figure it out being an engineering type person, but it's always nice to have a more planned direction .

3M has aluminum mesh body patches the you can buy to cut and mold. They have adhesive on one side of them to help stick to bare metal, but I would use a few rivets or self tapping screws as well. Then fill in with fiberglass cloth and resin, topcoat with a little bondo and paint.
I'll say it again... are you sure that there isn't any rust damage to the rear strut towers? |

Doesn't appear to be - I will take some pics when I get home from work. from inside the trunk, the strut towers look and feel clean and solid
I have all new struts and springs (and bushings) that I will be putting on soon also - so I'll see EVERYTHING inside there soon hahaha |

Here are pics of strut towers (assuming this is what you are talkin about haha)
Tell me what you think......
if you look closely at this one in upper right corner of pic, there is a LITTLE rust, but still very solid

I'm researching to tackle my rust.
Both my tempos had the rear quarters gnawed away, so i just put the bumper cover back on and the problem was solved!! Heh, ok maybe not. LOL
Ok, well i found this forum thread (since im contemplating on doing the rear floor pans), but in just the 15-20 minutes i took to read it I learned more about welding than I ever knew.
Key points:
Harbor frieght welders are junk according to pros. only 2 settings.
When welding sheet metal, use the thinnest wire (Mig Welder) and lowest setting
and last but not least, flatten a piece of copper pipe and use neo or rare earth magnets to affix to the back of the weld/joint. It makes for smoother seems!
http://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/238954-floor-pan-repair.html
These^ guys done quarters, fender, and tons of pics.
I can almost guarentee if u give time to read it, you'll say bye bye to bondo forever! |

hmmmm16417, looks to me that the right side strut tower is rusting through from the road side near the top, so when you remove the strut to replace it, make sure that you take preventative measures.
The factory spray on seam sealer is hideing the damage. |

Alrightly! I got the passenger strut out, and wire brushed off the old flakey rust and road grime. It actually is pretty solid! You had me worried LOL

Sounds like the "WAF" is playing a part in this... |

LOL if it was up to the wife, we would be building a NEW garage instead of redoing the old one LOL after putting $20k+ into the house last year, and close to that this year..... I don't see the problem in adding a couple extra grand for a lift. "it will pay for itself after the first year of working on our own cars" - that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
LMAO
So Big Daddy D., you think the area looks solid?

Hmm... I see a gap or its the joint where the strut tower joins up with the unit body.
You can fill that back in with automotive seam sealer, but I would apply something to halt the rust there before sealing it up.
Coating everything shown in that picture with either fiber glass resin or media blasting it, then apply epoxy primer before sealing it.
It looks like you caught it just in time... check out my post "The Former Fleet" in the T/T pic's forum , and you'll see what happened to my charcoal gray Topaz... so check to see if there are any reddy brown stains showing up on the road side of both towers on your red beastie as well.
BTW... those pic's of the gray Topaz where taken just before I parted it out and junked the rest of it. A $3200 complete body strip and base coat clear coat paint job killed by "Mr. Rust" just four years later. "She ain't pretty she just looks that way" , the strut tower broke away from the body during some "spirited driving". |

" I see a gap or its the joint where the strut tower joins up with the unit body"
there are no gaps that I could see. so "soft" spots either. probably what you are seeing is the joint that has that seal stuff on it. even the seem appears to be pretty solid. the only spot that really looks bad is the fender and that metal "flap" that comes down from the trunk and connects to the fender. |

Yes, like I said the joint... the sealant that the factory had over it has been leaking, due to it being rusty red on what is left of it.
You caught it just in time, based on what pitting that I am seeing in the surrounding steel work.
So now, get out a sharp blade and cut out the rest of the factory sealant from the joint and prep. it as you would, before re-sealing it back up. |
