Help Smile My transmission is misbehaving as of this morning. Does't want to shift out of first gear until about 26 -28 mph. (It will do that consistently). Doesn't seem to want to go into 3rd gear at all (but I'm not driving it more than 35 mph with this problem, so I don't know if it would eventually shift to 3rd). Normally, the transmission will shift into 3rd around 32 mph.

I checked the trans fluid level with engine warmed to normal operating temp, while in "Park", with engine running. Looked to need maybe a couple ounces, but the thing is a real booger to read. Added a couple ounces.

The first thing I thought of, was maybe the speed sensor died. Talked to the sales guy at Advance Auto, and he said the sensor in that year/model car does not control the shifting, only sends data to the computer. (Is that correct??)

This is the part I'm referring to: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Sensor---Vehicle-Speed-BWD_3460746-P_1179_R%7CGRPSENSAMS_565718654___

Last summer, I dropped the pan, drained and replaced the fluid (about 50%) and installed new filter. Has been problem free with 1 exception. Last winter, and again once this winter (on very cold mornings), the thing would refuse to shift out of first, but after a couple minutes, would behave normally.

1 more thing...I pulled the codes last year and got this: 29 insufficient input from vehicle speed sensor...but didn't address it because there did not seem to be any problem.

Any ideas as to what's happening?

Thanks.

Lack of fluid flow , due to dirty or sticking transmission valve bodies?
Still driving this car?

Sounds like you've lost the spring tensioner that goes from the throttle body area down to the transmission linkage. Ran into this problem a while back and I've seen others mention it here too. The spring could have simply popped loose or possibly cracked & come apart due to age & fatigue.

Other than that, you say you changed the majority of fluid "last summer". I'm assuming that this means the summer of 2010, correct? Sean

PS... your signature line says that you've got a 3.2 in your car. I'm guessing that is supposed to be a 2.3 ???
