Hi all, Im new to the board. just signed up.
I have a 92 tempo with an auto trans that doesnt seem to want to shift correctly. It goes in to gear normally and smoothly in both forward and reverse but while driving it doesnt want to shift out of 1st gear until about 40ish MPH and around 5k on the tach and wont shift out of 2nd until 65-70MPH. now the shifting itself is smooth, just doesnt want to shift at the correct time. I decided it was time to service the trans so i dropped the pan and replaced the filter and did a complete fluid flush. the magnet looked alright, no big chunks. still the same issue after servicing. i did some searching on here and it looks like these transmissions can be rebuilt at home fairly easy? i sure hope i dont have to rebuild it, I have no knowledge of how to rebuild one.
any ideas? im hoping its a sensor or something fairly easy.
thanks

Welcome to TTCCNA!! Hope you have a good time here. Lots of good info, good folks, and spirited conversations.
When you get a chance, fill in your location using the Profile link at the top of the page. While we're waiting for someone who knows the ATX a bit better than I do, check out out Tech Center and FAQ links at the left side of the page.
Someone will be along soon to ask questions or maybe have a fast fix. |

| Possible stuck governor weights, the assembly can be removed without yanking trans, under the round snap on cover at back of trans. Could be throttle linkage hanging up too, these are bitchy about that. Check the plastic bushing at bottom of kickdown linkage, it can break and fall out, leaving it loose and floppy. Either condition can affect the shift timing bigtime. Get someone to adjust the kickdown linkage according to the book. That adjustment greatly determines shift timing. |

| Ill check the governor weights, once removed will it be obvious if they are stuck? or what should I look for? also when you refer to the throttle linkage and kickdown linkage are you speaking of the same thing? will that be a cable running from the throttle itself down to the trans or will that be off the pedal to the trans? If it is the linkage would any general mechanic shop be able to adjust that or should i take it to a trans shop or dealer? |

There is a rod that attaches to throttle linkage that goes straight down to trans. That is kickdown, no cable. Technically called throttle pressure linkage, it tells trans the amount of throttle motor is using so trans can adjust shift quality and timing for load. Governor weights should move freely back and forth, no sticking.
This trans does it all oldschool, no electronic controls or input/output speed sensors to control trans. The VSS used by PCM for motor tuning only. Throttle pressure linkage merely replaces the old vacuum modulator many transmissions used. |

it was the kickdown linkage, the plastic bushing was missing. Prolly be a junkyard purchase, unless they are sold at the auto parts store, which i doubt. thanks for your help. |

A part number for this was listed in a recent thread about this same problem; it might show up by doing a search. |

| Dorman Motormite part number 14041 throttle and shift linkage bushing kit. Looks to me like one of them may work for that plastic bushing. |

Had the same problem with my 91 tempo. Not shifting unless the pedal is on the floor and putting my through the windsheild during downshifts. I printed these comments out before I put the car up on the lift. I found the kickdown linkage bushing had fallen out and the linkage itself was disconnected. I can't believe it was shifting at all...
That bushing kit you have listed about is the closest thing napa could refernece and it doesn't work. I had to turn down the OD of the only bushing in that kit that would snap over the post and use a C clip to hold it into the linkage. I am trying to find a best fit bushing right now. Will follow up if I can find it.
Just joined this site. This post helped me a ton yesterday. I appreciate the help! |

Yes, getting it installed is very problematic, you literally need to practically destroy bushing to get it in/on. Ford made a specialty set of pliers to install just this part but you won't find them.
FYI, the piece of linkage came from Ford with bushing already installed. Probably NLA by now though. |
