Okay so I have a '93 Tempo that I got from my granny for graduation (this is my first car), and it didn't have a huge amount of miles on it 33,000 give or take, had been running great until I moved to school (NC to AL). Lately when I have been sitting at traffic lights for more than 2-3 minutes my Tempo will start revving up as if you were going to race someone even though I'm sitting on the brake.
It has been a while (10 months or so) since it's had a tune up, regular oil changes. Temperature outside doesn't seem to make a difference, car doesn't seem to be running hot when it does it, or how much fuel it has in it. It doesn't do it every time you are at a light, it's just become more frequent and today it stalled out.
As I said this is my first car, so it's kind of my baby. I have just about everyone stumped as to what it could be, haven't taken it to a mechanic yet as I am a poor college student. haha just wanted to get ya'lls opinions on what it could be, or if anyone else has had this problem. |

Have you resolved the problem? If not, the first thing that I would look into was the IAC ( Idle Air Control ) valve. When this starts developing problems, you'll experience exactly what you are describing. Sean

| If it's not the IAC (the IAC can be removed without much effort look on the driver side behind the intake manifold and there are two bolts that hold it on, along with a single wire connector at the base of the unit. ALSO, do not attempt to start the car without replacing the IAC your car will go crazy. Can be cleaned with CARB cleaner. Make sure it is completely dry before re-installing.) I would try seeing if your injectors are clogged. Odds are if its only got 33,000 miles on it, and it is 18 years old, then there could be some things that had been building up blockage. Does your engine ever give you a hard time getting off of a start? This could conclude that the injectors are blocked/clogged and the engine is trying to compensate for it by intentionally revving the engine to keep it from stalling. That would happen to me every now and then. I would be sitting at a light and then my RPMs would drop a lot, and then the engine would rev to like 4000 RPMs to keep it from stalling. Mind you I don't stop any closer than 5 feet from the car in front of me because the times that it happened, my car lurched about 3 feet forward. HA really scary the first time it happened. But anyways I would check the fuel pressure running to and from the fuel rail. If that is good, then unplug your fuel regulator hose (a small black hose on the INTAKE manifold that leads to a small round object that looks sorta like it could be a filter on the fuel rail.) and then get a plastic cap to cap off the male end on the side of the manifold. This will basically increase the pressure in the fuel rail, and force more gas through the injectors. If the stalling seems to not happen as much, then I would have your injectors float tested and possibly cleaned. Be warned though, your gas mileage will go down while you drive without the regulator plugged in. Welcome to the Forums by the Way! The best things to look on here are the things that can be done in a short amount of time and are fairly cheep. |

Im going with the IAC idle air controv valve as well, just replaced mine a few months a go did the same thing.She now purrs at a nice 850-900 rpm at a stop
