My push-button HVAC isnt working at all. The only thing it'll do is switch from OFF to on. No matter what button you depress, it just comes out of the windshield defogger and the side demisters.

I traced the problem down to the vaccum lines under the hood. They were disconnected, broken clean in half. Every time I tried to move them, the plastic part of the line would just crumble. Its a really tiny line.

I had the same problem with the vaccum line running to the EGR valve, but I was able to tape it back together for now.

Does anybody know where I can find these, other than on a junkyard car? I'm afraid to try to get one at the junkyard because it's quite a trip down there (about 100 miles) and theirs might be just as brittle as mine are.

I'm going to try rock auto and autozone but something tells me I'll hit a brick wall.

Any suggestions?

Those are OEM pieces and you can't get them anywhere other than Ford. That is, IF they still offer them. Just use the smallest rubber vacuum line that you can find. It will work fine and be FAR more reliable than any "fossil" that you could ever get from the boneyard. You might want to check out the other vacuum lines in the car while you're at it. If those are cracked or split, i'm sure that you've got more that are in similar condition. Heat and age are the enemy and they are all under the hood "cooking" and aging day by day. Sean

Well, Autozone wanted to sell me a $20 kit that may or may not have the right one, so I went to O'Rilies and they had one that I was able to make work for $0.42. Did NOT fix the problem though, it's still blowing out of the defroster/demisters only. You can press the buttons and you dont hear any "shhhh thump" like you usually do and nothing changes. I guess I will need a new control pad after all. I tried pulling the one out of the LX since it's outer casing is slightly damaged but worked fine when I parked the car, but I couldn't figure out how to disconnect the temp control cable. I found where it is but I can't figure out how to get it to disconnect. Its SO hot outside, maybe I'll try again later on when it cools off.

Thanks Sean.

Yes, the internals of the temperature control head get very brittle over time -- especially in the heat.

Near as I can figure BOTH ends of the cable need to be disconnected. One end at the heater box, so you can have some slack to pull the control head out. The first step is to set the temp lever at cool position, then disconnect the cable from the heater box. Then pull the control unit and disconnect the cable from the temp lever. I haven't personally done it, but that's the way it was explained to me.

We were at our local Pull-A-Part yard this weekend looking for parts for the '97 Ranger; I understand HOT. BTW, got some really nice seats out of a '91 Topaz that will mount just fine in the Ranger. Next we look for an Explorer center console. PAP had lots of Exploders, most with really picked over interiors, or really crappy left-overs.

If you have no near-by JY, then try www.car-part.com. Sometimes you get lucky!

I found one on eBay last night (a climate control pad), looks to be in pretty good shape so I bid on it. I'm trying to get these little issues fixed but I'm on a very limited budget.

I drove the car about 150-200 miles today, trying to get my friend's Avalon going (what a F around, seriously) and the A/C blowing out of the defroster was OK, but when the hot sun is directly on you (especially in traffic), it's really nice to have it blowing right on your face out of the Pannel Vents. Hopefully a new HVAC pad will fix it.

**Edit to add (thought I had posted this last night)
I did get the temp cable disconnected from the heater box ('92 LX), but the pad still wont budge. I put two small tools in there to try to release the clips, but they wont budge. I even reached up from under the dash (through the radio hole) and tried to push it out, no luck. I think that this guy who was supposed to work on my car tried to take it out and he damaged it. I know the face pannel (around the buttons) is all tweaked after he got through with it. Idiot.

I guess I'll try to see if I can get the one out of the GLS when the new pad gets here.

If it wasn't done right it could bend up the retaining clips. The best tool is a Ford radio removal tool, the next best is a wire hanger. It can be done with thin screwdrivers, but that's not really a good way. All that is needed is to release the clips from the sliders - doesn't take a lot.

I'm sure Ryan (the guy working on the car that time) is at fault, he can look at a car and break it. One of the reasons I dont talk to him anymore.

Well, I'm trying my best to get a new HVAC pad, I'll be carefull and try what you suggested (coat hanger) to get the one out of the GLS when the new one gets here.
*Edit to say, I won the eBay auction for a HVAC pad in great shape and was able to afford it, so it'll be 3-7 days and I'll be giving this a shot. *fingers crossed* LOL Smile

I too had an issue with what I thought was the in dash unit. After finding and purchasing a new unit, I found that it was the blend door causing my issues. In any case the part number is E83Z 19980-A and is available from various sellers on the net. This link http://stores.channeladvisor.com/USASUPERSALE/items/item.aspx?itemid=586886
is selling the unit for $40 US.
I also have my old working one ( it was working when I changed it) that I could send to you if you pay the shipping.
