Tempo - Topaz Car Club of North America FAQs (frequently-asked questions)

Category: Main -> Ford Tempo / Mercury Topaz FAQ -> Audio Systems

Question

Answer

What are the differences in the sound systems offered on the T/T?

The Tempo/Topaz were offered with two types of radios and speaker systems. Base Tempo's and Topaz's were optioned with an AM/FM radio; an integrated cassette player was optional, but most people bought it. The two speaker systems available were the base and Premium systems.

Can I install an amplifier or subwoofer in my T/T?

Yes. 1988-1994 T/T owners should be able to hook a small amplifier or subwoofer up to their stock radio/cassette deck. In most cases though, one would be better off replacing the factory head unit with a newer, more modern piece. This will not only provide higher power levels with increased functionality, but also the necessary outputs to drive aftermarket amplifiers, etc...

Can I install a large audio system in my Tempo / Topaz?

Large (meaning loud) audio systems require a lot more power than most people think. Plugging a large stereo into your wall jack at home is different than your car, which has more finite energy reserves. It all depends on the size of your system. A qualified car audio shop can tell you how much power your system will draw and tell you whether or not you need an extra battery, a more powerful alternator, or capacitors to deliver the extra juice required.

What kind of speakers are the best for our cars?

It all depends on what you want to do! Think of your car as a blank canvas

How do you set the clock on the factory head unit?

With the stereo turned on, depress and hold the "volume" control while the unit displays the time. While depressing the volume control, you can depress the "down" tune button to change the hour shown. Depressing the "up" tune button will change the minutes. There is no AM / PM adjustment on these clocks, so once you've got the right time, that's all you need to do.
